Colonial Forces Study Group

The members of our group have joined together to collectively locate, collate and disseminate information and knowledge on the naval and military forces of colonial Queensland (1860 - 1901).
We aim to:

• Develop a structured project to systematically record all available data on every function of those forces
• Share freely amongst the members the resource material of the group for the purpose of study and analysis
• Produce articles, indexes, and other publications both on-line and in-print as a result of our research.
• Provide a web presence for to disseminating information and responding to public inquiries on the subject.

We intend to centrally acquire data to enable the considered analysis of all aspects of the activities, actions, internal working, training regimes, tactical capabilities, social interactions and political machinations of a colonial military force from its formation to its melding into the Commonwealth military forces.

The project we have begun is a long-term one, that will build on the research already undertaken, and delve into areas yet to be uncovered. Ultimately this social history project should enable us to examine the development of what was essentially a voluntary body involved in government work for almost half a century, and promises to unravel many of the threads of 19th century Queensland society.
