Living Queensland's Scottish Heritage

History of the Queensland Scottish Volunteer Corps

In the days of Britain's Empire, kilted regiments marched on every continent to the skirl of pipes and the beat of drums. Some were regiments of Her Majesty's Army, and others, no less proud of their heritage, were part of local colonial defence forces.

The Queensland Scottish Volunteer Corps (QSVC) was formed in 1885, when it was feared the Empires of Great Britain and Russia would go to war.

Part of the Queensland Defence Force, the volunteer Corps formed three companies in Brisbane, and one each in Ipswich, Toowoomba and Rockhampton between 1885 and 1896.

To identify with their national heritage, the Queensland Scottish were kilted, wearing the uniform based on that of the 92nd Gordon Highlanders.shanThe Corps continued in its own right until 1896, when it's remaining companies were absorbed into the 2nd Battalion of the Queensland Rifles.

The pride and tradition of the Queensland Scottish continues today, with the revival of 'A' Company of the Corps as part of the Queensland Scottish Living History Project.
